Net Retention Rate (NRR)
What is Net Retention Rate (NRR)?
Net Retention Rate (NRR), also known as Net Revenue Retention, is a key metric that measures the percentage of recurring revenue retained from existing customers over a given period, including the effects of upgrades, downgrades, and churn. An NRR above 100% means the organisation is growing revenue from its existing customer base even without acquiring new customers.
NRR is particularly important in SaaS and subscription-based businesses where long-term customer relationships drive sustainable growth.
How to calculate NRR
The formula for Net Retention Rate is:
NRR = (Starting Revenue + Expansion − Contraction − Churn) / Starting Revenue × 100
- Starting Revenue: The recurring revenue at the beginning of the period.
- Expansion: Additional revenue from existing customers through upsells, cross-sells, or plan upgrades.
- Contraction: Revenue lost from downgrades or reduced usage by existing customers.
- Churn: Revenue lost from customers who cancelled entirely.
Why NRR matters
NRR is one of the most important indicators of business health:
- Revenue predictability A high NRR signals that existing customers are growing in value, providing a stable revenue foundation.
- Customer satisfaction indicator NRR reflects how well the organisation delivers value. Customers who expand their relationship are clearly satisfied. Read more about customer loyalty.
- Efficient growth Retaining and expanding existing customers is significantly more cost-effective than acquiring new ones. Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) increases with higher NRR.
- Investor confidence For SaaS companies, NRR is a critical metric that investors use to evaluate growth potential and business sustainability.
Improving NRR
Organisations can improve NRR by reducing churn through better customer experience, identifying expansion opportunities through customer insights, and building strong relationships that make customers want to invest more in the partnership. Tracking retention rate alongside NRR gives a complete picture of customer health.
